Over the last four centuries, American universities and colleges have developed into a higher education system, comprising complex types and origins. As the physical embodiment of the educational and institutional philosophy of universities or colleges, the campuses and their architecture are richer than one can imagine. This article is intended to introduce the historical contexts and features of several major architectural styles in a lighthearted way, which is illustrated as a cartoon of American campuses. The current theme focuses on two popular traditional styles: the Collegiate Gothic style and the Georgian style.
