On Journalistic Ethics Thoughts and Moral Failings of Lin Poshui

林白水是晚清和民国时期著名的报人,资产阶级民主革命家,中国白话报的先驱。他在20余年的办报生涯中,发表了许多阐述新闻伦理思想的论文,提出了一些富有创见的观点。他认为,记者办报应有正确的动机;要具备"说人话、不说鬼话"的专业主义品格;要有敢于斗争的硬骨头精神。他的这些观点及其道德实践体现了军阀统治时期新闻记者特有的精神个性。但是,林白水在新闻活动中也有道德缺失的一面,最突出的表现就是收受津贴、公开利用报纸卖文和常常侮辱谩骂他人。他的理论主张和实践行为,为我们了解和认识当时记者的生存状态与伦理选择提供了重要的依据。

Lin Poshui is a famous journalist, bourgeois democratic revolutionist, and the pioneer of Chinese vernacu- lar newspaper of the late Qing and Republican period. Among more than 20 years＇ newspaper career, he published many papers elaborating on his journalistic ethics thought in which some thoughtful ideas were put forward. In his view, re- porters should set a newspaper with right motivation; they should ＂say truth, do not say nonsense＂; and should have the courage to fight. His ideas and moral practice reflected distinctive personality of reporters＇ in the period of warlord regime. However, Lin Poshui also has moral failings in news reporting activities, the most prominent performance were accepting allowances, selling articles by newspaper, and insulting others. His theory and practice choice provided an im- portant basis for us to acknowledge the living conditions and ethical choice of reporters then.
