Changes in the Chinese-Americans' Cultural Identity during the 1930s and 40s: From Separation to Integration——Based on the Text Analysis between Chinese Digest and Chinese Press

移民报刊在移民群体文化认同构建过程中扮演着重要角色。以20世纪三四十年代具有代表性的美国华人报刊《华美周刊》与《华美周报》为文本比较对象,通过对两份报刊相关华人社区与主流社会关系、华人群体与祖籍国及其文化之间关系的报道分析,揭示了这一时期美国华人文化认同从"隔离"到"融合"的转变。研究表明,移民群体认同构建不纯粹是文化性的,也是该群体对主流社会对其边缘化程度的主动性或被动性反应。

The ethnic press plays a significant role in the construction of the immigrants＇ cultural identity.This study endeavors to elaborate the transition of the Chinese Americans＇ cultural identity from Separation to Integration during the 1930 s and 40 s through the text analysis of the relations between the Chinese Americans＇ community and the main-stream society of the adopted country, between the Chinese Americans and their mother-land, the original culture. The study reveals that the construction of the ethnic immigrants＇ cultural identity is more than cultural, and it is also an active or passive response to the extent of marginalization caused by the main-stream society in the adopted country.
