摘要 In this richly and impressively researched, analyzed, and written volume, Parks Coble studies the work of war reporters during the resistance war against Japan (1937-45) but also the war reporters of the "new remembering" of the war from the mid-to-late 1980s to the present. This comprehensive coverage allows him to ask the key question: what place, what meaning does the war have in "the framework of modem Chinese history" (p. 191)? In the end, because of the controlling grip of politics during the wartime period, the era of Mao and Maoism, and the reformist period, he cogently concludes that "the understanding of the meaning of the war remains nebulous" (p. 3).
