在钱谷融的文学思想中,影响最为深远和最为突出的是他的人道主义文学思想,其标志和成熟的代表作应是《论"文学是人学"》。但在这之前,钱谷融却经历了一个较长的"人学"探索阶段,以时间论之,是1949年建国后开始的;以逻辑起点论之,则是其早年所形成的人生观和文艺观;以演进过程来看,经历了"人"的认识深化、高尔基的"人学"思想追寻和"人学"思想成熟之初步显示的三个阶段。
