Formal discipline is a kind of learning theory which evolves from faculty psychology.Locke has contributed a lot to the development of formal discipline.Formal discipline believes that education is training the mind in order to have cope with all dif-ficulties in life.This theory believes strengthening the faculties is more important than the content of the study.Formal discipline runs through all aspects of the education of Locke＇ s educational theory.Formal discipline has some contradictions with theory of tabula rasa.
