Three Recently Discovered Letters from Zhang Taiyan

章太炎晚年寓居苏州锦帆路五十号后,打算利用屋后的余地修建一些房舍,用作国学讲习所的学舍。由于吴县政府打算在市内修建一条民治路,恰好要经过章太炎的后宅,所以一直没有给他颁发执照。尽管几经交涉,章太炎仍然没有领到执照。他写信给吴县建设局,称将自由营造,愿交罚款。在此情况下,学舍的修建继续进行,自然遭到了吴县建设局勒令停工的指令。于是,章太炎向友人张继求助。张继来苏州之后,事情并未解决。章太炎便直接向江苏省建设厅呈递一文,请求改定路线,并请张继帮忙疏通。在他过世之后,此事方得以解决。

In his late years,Zhang Taiyan lived in a residence at 50 Jinfan Road in Suzhou,Jiangsu province. In preparations for his Institute of Chinese Classics,he wanted to have houses built behind his residence. However,despite several negotiations,Zhang failed to obtain permission because in the plan of the Wu county government,a new Minzhi Road was to run through the back of his residence. Although Zhang wrote to the local Construction Bureau and would accept a fine,the construction was interrupted by the Bureau. Therefore,he wrote two letters to his friend Zhang Ji asking for help. Zhang Ji then came to Suzhou but failed to settle down the matter. Finally,Zhang submitted his request directly to the Construction Department of Jiangsu Province with a suggested alternative plan of the Minzhi Road and,at the same,asked for assistance from Zhang Ji. The final solution was not reached until after Zhang Taiyan＇s death.
