Such themes as body politics and historical writing in the studies on Clock without Hands by Carson McC ullers have yet to appear. The paper argues that, firstly, grotesquery is employed in this novel to imply spiritual and ideological plights; secondly, alienated by consumerism as some sort of ideology, the characters try in vain to transform their complex of inferiority to that of superiority, thus showing illusory aestheticization; thirdly, the bodily desire is subversive since Marx's revolutionary politics and Freud's psychoanalysis are similar to each other in cultural criticism in that they both deconstruct rationalism and absolutism.
