The paper argues that, firstly, grotesquery is employed in this novel to imply spiritual and ideological plights; secondly, alienated by consumerism as some sort of ideology, the characters try in vain to transform their complex of inferiority to that of superiority, thus showing illusory aestheticization; thirdly, the bodily desire is subversive since Marx's revolutionary politics and Freud's psychoanalysis are similar to each other in cultural criticism in that they both deconstruct rationalism and absolutism.
