《在我们的时代里》是海明威第一部短篇小说集,其表层文本结构给人混乱而无序的印象,插文之间、小说之间、插文与小说之间似乎风马牛不相及;就其整体文本结构而言,插文与小说形成了跳跃性极大的"现在—过去"框架结构;就其深层文本结构而言,插文和跋展现了当下时代的战争、暴力,小说则是海明威过往生活片段的变形、提炼,特别是尼克的人生故事明显映射出海明威本人生活的痕迹,相互之间具有互文性,插文与小说全面客观地揭示了"我们的时代"种种残酷、不堪的真相。因此,其表层结构的无序,实际上正是"我们的时代"混乱无序的象征和隐喻,是作家精心营造的产物,其结构艺术在海明威小说中别具一格。
The surface textual structure of"In Our Time"—Hemingway' s first collection of short stories renders readers and researchers an impression of chaos and disorder. Vignettes, novels, pairs of vignettes and novels are related to one another as like as an apple to an oyster. In the case of the whole textual structure, vignettes and novels form a 'now-past' frame structure that is characterized by an utterly great leap in time transition. As far as the deep textual structure is concerned, vignettes and the postscript demonstrate wars and violence throughout the present era, and novels record deformed and refined fragments of Hemingway' s past life, which can obviously and reasonably be spotted from and associated with the life story of Nick, the hero of In our time. Nick' s life stories are intertextual with Hemingway ' s personal experiences. Vignettes and novels comprehensively and objectively bring diverse cruel, nasty and obscene truths of our times to light. Consequently, the disorder of the surface structure of the text serves as an actual and appropriate metaphor, symbolizing the chaotic and disorder present times of ours. Also, this disorder is the product of the writer' s elaborate creation and the artistry of organizing structure has a distinctive style among Hemingway' s novels.
