By introducing the protective and renovate project of Xiaohe Street Historic Block in Hangzhou, this article focuses on the analysis of the difficulties, the experience worthy of learning and the problems of renovation. It centers not only on how effectively to protect the scenery of historic blocks and sustain the urban historic culture, but also on how to improve the residents＇ living quality giving consideration to both social and economic benefits. By summarizing the successful protective experience of historic blocks at home and abroad, it makes suggestions on the scientific and reasonable protection of historic blocks from the perspectives of protective patterns, distinctive digging, improvement of livelihoods, public participation and so on.
