Chinese Translations of Hamlet: A Century's Evolution

本文回顾了Hamlet一剧汉译的文本呈现方式在中国的历时演变。作者指出,Hamlet一剧在中国经历了从文言故事到白话剧本,从诗体译本探索到研究型译本的演变过程,这一过程不仅伴随着国人和译者对莎剧认识的不断加深,也是各类莎学成果逐步应用于翻译实践的探索过程,翻译规范的发展变化在一程度上也促成了这一演变。

The present paper reviews the different Chinese translations of Shakespeare＇ s Hamlet in terms of mode of textual presentation. The evolution of Hamlet in China, from classical Chinese to vernacular Chinese, from an adapted story to a complete play, from prose style to poetic style, from popular versions to those based on Shakespearean studies, is accompanied with a deepening understanding of Shake- speare＇ s plays and the gradual application of new findings in Shakespearean studies to their translations. The diachronical changes in translation norms, to some extent, also contribute to the century＇ s evolution of Hamlet in China.
