Why Is Translation So Difficult?

翻译怎么这么难?翻译学什么?翻译怎么学?作者试图通过十余年的翻译审稿经验说明:翻译的难度,取决于两种语言间差异的大小,还取决于这种差异是隐是显。而要了解语言差异,莫过于进行细致系统的语言比较,这就是翻译学习的内容了。翻译学习的目的,是为了最终内化语言差异,形成语言差异意识即翻译意识;为达此目的,作者将理想的翻译学习模式描述为4-ings:Reading-Observing-Imitating-Translating.

Why is translation so difficult？ What should be learned to qualify one as a translator？ How should one learn to be a translator？ Concerning these questions,the author attempts,drawing on his more than ten years＇ experience as an examiner for a bilingual magazine,to demonstrate that the level of difficulty in translation between two languages is determined by the degrees to which the two languages in question are different,and by whether implicit or explicit those differences are. And a knowledge of language differences can only be obtained through thorough and systematic language comparison. One learns translation to internalize language differences,namely,to cultivate a language difference consciousness,or translation consciousness. To this end,the author models the translation learning process as 4-ings：Reading-Observing-Imitating-Translating.
