On the Adjacency Pair in Cruise Service English Based on Pragmatic Competence Cooperative Principle

This paper indicates that conversations in cruise service English mainly exist in the form of adjacency pairs. During these conversations, speakers should obey cooperative principles respecting to the field of pragmatic competence： quantitative maxim, quality maxim, relation maxim and manner maxim. When given a ＂dispreferred second part＂ response, speakers should use certain cushioned words or phrases in order to avoid a direct disagreement or conflict. And it is found that even giving a ＂dispreferred second part＂ response should obey the ＂cooperative principle＂ as well.
