On Li Changzi's Strategy for and the Revelation of His Conception of the May 4^(th) New Cultural Movement

李长之是20世纪三四十年代名震文坛的风云人物,他对五四新文化运动的阐释却较少学者重视。李长之以启蒙运动和文艺复兴的双重视角构想五四,认为它在本质上是一场启蒙运动,其时代精神还构不成文艺复兴。他的真实意图是,中国文化的未来,能够接着五四的启蒙精神往前发展,在超越五四的过程中真正完成文艺复兴的使命。还原和挖掘李长之诠释五四的真知灼见,对我们当今的文化建设仍具有启人心智的价值。

Li Changzi was a reputed man in the literary circle in the 1930＇s and 1940＇s, but few scholars paid attention to his interpretation of the May 4th New Cultural Movement. Li conceived of the Movement from a double perspective, thinking that it was an enlightenment movement in its essence but it was not a Renaissance in terms of its spirit. His true intention was that the future development of the Chinese culture could follow the enlightenment spirit of the May 4th New Cultural Movement and, by transcending the Movement, achieve genuinely the mission of Renaissance. The revelation of Li Changzhi＇s insights into the May 4＇h Movement gives an inspiration for our current cultural construction.
