In the film La Dolce Vita, Fellini uncovers unbalanced spirit in material civilization with an objective and dispassionate camera. Like a wall painting, the film presents a collapsed disaster, sneers at the mental degradation and moral depravity of the upper class in Rome, and criticizes the fanatical religious beliefs and apathetic mental state of people at the bottom. As life is bitter in na- ture, lonely individuals are hidden beneath the sweet surface, decadent and empty souls floating everywhere in luxurious material life.
