伯莎·梅森是《简·爱》中经常被忽略的女性人物。作为生活在男权社会的女性,伯莎没有经济能力,没有婚姻自主权,是一个被剥夺了话语权的"他者";而作为来自被英国殖民的西印度群岛的女性,伯莎的"他者"身份被双重化了,成为了阁楼上的"疯女人"。然而伯莎并不愿意屈从于"他者"的束缚,"疯狂"只是她的面具,在这一面具的掩盖下,伯莎进行了四次报复性反抗,最终与象征着男权社会的桑菲尔德庄园同归于尽,向读者展示了19世纪女性追求平等,寻求自我,确立自我身份的艰难历程。

Bosha Meisen is a female image often ignored in Jane Eyre.As a female in patriarchal society,Bosha is an＂other＂deprived of discourse power,without economic ability and marriage autonomy either.As a female from West Indies,the colony of Britain,Bosha’s＂other＂identity has been doubled,who becomes a mad woman in the attic.However,Bosha is not willing to subject herself to the bondage of being an＂other＂.Under the mask of madness,she conducts four revengeful revolts,and perishes together with Thornfield finally.Through this,Bosha shows us the hardship the 19 th century female faced in the process of pursuing gender equality and self-identity.
