A Survey of the Acquaintance and Cooperation between Witter Bynner and Kiang Kang-hu as well as the Publication of Their The Jade Mountain

陶友白与江亢虎所译《群玉山头》是《唐诗三百首》的第一个英文全译本,在中美文化交流史上具有极其重要的地位。陶友白与江亢虎均曾在加州大学伯克利分校执教,且其任教时间相互交叉,这为两人的交游与合作提供了时间与空间上的可能性。其间,众多刊物为译诗的发表提供了广阔阵地,为《群玉山头》的传播、影响与最后结集出版打下了坚实基础。

The Jade Mountain, translated by Witter Bynner from the Texts of Kiang Kang-hu, is the first full--length English translation of Hengtangtuishi＇s 300 Poems of the Tang Dynasty, and has attrac- ted much attention since its publication in 1929. Kiang worked in the University of California at Berkeley between the 1914～1915 and 1919～1920 academic years, while Bynner taught there in the 1918～1919 aca- demic year, which provided a spatio--temporal opportunity for Kiang and Bynner＇s acquaintance and coop- eration. And quite a lot of periodicals provided smooth channels for their translations, which laid a solid foundation for the final publication of The Jade Mountain.
