Kawabata usually sets the women of the lowest stratum as the leading character of his works. And among them, Kaoru from "The Dancing Girl" of Izu and Komako with Youko from "The Snowland" are the representatives to reflect the hierarchical identity system in Japan. They are living as dancer or geisha of the lowest level of society. They can not get rid of their doomed endings even if their persistent pursuit of purity and sublimation. As the heroine of the novel, they are living in vain and their miserable fate reflects and denounces the dark Japanese hierarchy.
