Objective To examine whether parental and professional evaluations are consistent. Methods The parents and auditory verbal therapists of 50 children with hearing loss were recruited from Children's Hearing Foundation(CHF)in Taiwan. The mean age of children with hearing loss was 57 months. All of them have been receiving auditory verbal therapy (AVT) from CHF. The Chinese version of Auditory Skills Checklist(ASC) was administered to evaluate the functional auditory skills of these children. Both the parents and the auditory verbal therapists were asked to fill in the Chinese version of ASC. Results There was a strong positive correlation between parents' and therapists' ratings. And t-test showed no significant difference between them. For each of the four auditory developmental stages, there was a positive correlation between parents' and therapists' evaluations. The parents' ratings were higher than the therapists', but there was a significant difference only for the comprehension stage(P〈0.05). Conclusion When evaluating the auditory skills of children with hearing loss, especially for the younger ones, both parents' and professionals' observation should be included because the ratings may be inconsistent. Additionally, ASC is a practical tool for auditory verbal therapists and other professionals for guiding parents to observe their children's functional auditory skills and for monitoring children's progress.
