Modern Dance in Higher Education

《高等教育中的现代舞》是艾玛·霍金斯(Alma M.Hawkins,1905-1998)在20世纪50年代的理论著作。霍金斯于20世纪30年代,在美国著名现代舞教育圣地本宁顿学院(Bennington College)学习舞蹈,师从现代舞大师多丽丝·韩夫丽(Doris Humphrey)及汉娅·霍尔姆(Hanya Holm)。同时,霍金斯深受著名教育哲学家哈罗德·荣格(Harold Rugg)的影响,将其一生致力于舞蹈教育的研究。该书在80年代再版,全书共六章,包括:第一章,回顾现代舞蹈在美国高等教育中的发展历程。第二章,现代舞在高等教育中的目标。第三、四、五章,分别从现代舞与人的身体、现代舞与个人表现、现代舞与人际关系三个方面,重点论述了现代舞在高等教育中的独特价值。第六章,展望现代舞在高等教育中发展的新趋势,并给出建议。本文选译自20世纪80年代年代版本中的第六章"现代舞:新方向"。

Alma M. Hawkins（ 1905 -1998）studied dance at Bennington College during the 1930s, which is the holy land of the famous American modern dance education and studied with the masters of modern dance-Doris Humphrey and Hanya Holm. She was also inspired by the famous education philosopher-Harold Rugg and dedicated all her life to the research of dance education. Hawkins wrote this book in the 1950s, which was reprinted in the 1980s. It emphasized that modern dance as a ＂new dance＂ made an important contribution to the higher education in the United States. The first chapter, reviews the development of modern dance in higher education in order to provide a basis for understanding the current situation ; Chapter2 explains modern dance and the purposes of higher education. Chapters 3,4, and 5 identify the contributions of modern dance to the goals sought through higher education; and, finally, Chapter 6 draws conclusions concerning the role of modern dance in higher education and suggests principles that should guide the teaching of modern dance.
