Vacuum furnace has got more and more applied in heat treatment of tool and die steel, and seems to have a tendency to replace the salt bath furnace. It is introduced the merit and demerit of salt bath furnace in heat treatment of HSS and the application of vacuum furnace in heat treatment. It is compared the both in cost, concluded the superiorities of the latter, proposed the development direction for the latter.
