This paper explores the design and fabrication process of the timeless structure. Combines age-old techniques for spanning vaults in pure compression with cutting-edge digital fabrication technologies, structural analysis software and computation, the memorial creates a shallow vaulted structure made of solid stone with a five-point figure and an inner space of reflection. The fabrication involves sophisticated stone carving by computer- controlled saws and a robotic arm to create the curved geometry of the blocks. The massive stone blocksare then set on-site by masons through an intricate scaffolding sequence. Methodologically, the design process for the Sean Collier Memorial involved a back and forth process between the construction of physical, analog, and digital models and simulations with digital tools. The design showcases both new digital fabrication methods as well as traditional stone setting masonry techniques, celebrating both contemporary technology and timeless craft.
