纽曼是高等教育思想发展史上里程碑式的人物。他的《大学的理想》开启了高等教育理论研究的先河,其大学理想来源于他的哲学和宗教思想。纽曼的大学理想,内容丰富,涉及到大学的许多方面,但是主要包括他的大学观和大学教育思想体系两个方面。他的大学理想仍具有当代价值,当然也有一定的历史局限。

Newman is a landmark figure in the history of higher education. His The Idea of a University opened the beginning of theoretical research of higher education. His idea came from his philosophical and religious thoughts. His idea was rich in content and related to many aspects of a university, but mainly included two aspects： his concept of a university and ideology system about university education. His idea of a university still has contemporary value with a certain historical limitation.
