摘要
In Naipaul's twenty-first century novels,Half a Life and Magic Seeds, marriage is not only a means by which characters seek political benefits and relieve themselves of racial political and cultural anxieties, but also a mirror in which the social reality of Britain in the second half of the twentieth century with London as its miniature is vividly reflected. The theme of marriage has become Naipaul's self-expressive vehicle through which Naipaul not only condemns the devastating influences of western cultural imperialism upon Third World countries' national independence movement and the establishment of national dignity and confidence, but also makes his call for an ethical awareness that goes beyond national, political and cultural differences. The call for ethical awareness also enables Naipaul to relieve his moral anxieties caused by his exile complex and his sense of civilization crisis.
