汉语科技术语中的"副"字意义丰繁、使用频率高。从词性看,"副"字可用作形容词、名词和量词;从位置看,"副"字可位于词首、词中和词尾;从意义看,"副"字继承了其传统意义中的"非正"、"次要"、"成对"及其引申意义。"副"字的翻译可利用英语前缀和单词,有时不译。有些术语有多种译文。这些不同译文在语法功能、使用习惯和使用范围上存在差异。
The Chinese character＂副＂is rich and complex in meaning and high in frequency of use in Chinese technical terminology. It can be used as an adjective, noun or classifier. It can appear at the beginning, middle and end of a term. The technical meanings of＂副＂are developed out of its traditional meanings such as ＂deputy＂, ＂mi-nor＂, ＂pair＂ as well as their extended meanings. In translating＂副＂, English prefixes and words can be employed and sometimes it need not be translated. Some terms with＂副＂may each have several English equivalents which are different from each other in grammar, usage and scope of use.
