摘要
保罗·哈丁在2010年度普利策小说奖获奖作品《修补匠》中,成功运用沉默的修辞手法对克罗斯比家族祖孙三代的故事展开描述。在小说中,沉默主要包括叙事者的沉默和主人公话语的沉默。叙事者的沉默把读者纳入了参与文本构建的过程中,读者进而对小说进行解码和阐释,其阅读层次也就更加丰富和细腻,从而在更大程度上呈现出小说的文学价值。主要人物的沉默象征着权力的丧失和自我身份的模糊,这对刻画主人公的内心世界和人物形象以及表达其思想,都起到了巨大的作用。
In the novel Tinkers, the winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, Paul Harding successfully uses the technique of silence to tell the stories of the three generations in Crosby family. In this novel, silence mainly includes the narrators' silence and the silence of the main characters. This paper attempts to analyze the appliance of silence in Tinkers, and its functions to promote the plots and to create the characters, in order that the readers will have a new view to understand the theme of the novel and images of the main characters much better.
