The names of twelve special pulses as Zong, Heng, Ni, Shun, Fan, Fu, Gao, Zhang, Gang, Die, Bei and Sun were first appeared in Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases · Normal Pulse written by ZHANG Zhong-jing, and which was categorized as twelve pulses by LI Zhong-zhi in Zhen Jia Zheng Yan · Mai Fa Zong Lun in Ming dynasty. ‘ZHANG Zhong-jing's discussion on twelve pulses" was regarded as an independent lemma by DENG Tie-tao in Zhong Guo Yi Xue Da Ci Dian. Twelve pulses as a part of Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases was less discussed by the later scholars. This paper explained the literal meaning and connotation of twelve pulses based on the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine and referenced on relevant clauses of Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases and interpretation of ‘ZHANG Zhong-jing's discussion on twelve pulses' explained by predecessors.
