Most people pay more attention to the tragedy in Herman Melville＇ s Moby Dick, while focusing less on its comic elements. In fact, this novel is full of corr^c air with regard to its language, characters, scenes and the composition as a whole, which forms a contrast to Ahab＇ s tragedy. The humor of Ishmael, the narrator, indicates his satire against Western culture. The combination of tragedy and comedy is a true picture of human existence. For Ishmael, his comic spirit is the wisdom to survive in adversity.
