Professor LIAN Jiang-wei believes that the etiology and pathogenesis of chronic atrophic gastritis is the weak- ness of spleen and stomach which is root of disease, and that Qi depression, damp-heat, blood stasis and hot poison are the branch of disease, which furtherlly lead to gastric atrophy because of dysfunction of stomach Qi, stagnation in collaterals and losing of moistening stomach. According to the therapeutic principle of middle-jiao resembling balance and the syndrome characteristics of atrophic gastritis, Professor LIAN diagnoses and treats chronic atrophic gastritis with distinct academic fea- tures such as ＂tonifying and depressing stomach Qi skillfully and gently＂, ＂harmonizing liver and spleen, combining soothing liver with strengthening spleen＂, ＂removing dampness and heat with the method of aromatic damp-resolving, bitter and warm damp-dispelling and clearing hot＂, ＂dispersing blood stasis and dredging collateral throughout＂, ＂focusing on detoxification for intestinal metaplasia and hyperplasia＂, and ＂connecting the western and eastern medical science, using tongue diagnosis and electronic gastroscopy coreferentially＂.
