Patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) require mechanical ventilation, which is aiming at ensuring adequate oxygenation and minimizing ventilator-induced lung injure. It is important for patients with ARDS to maintain spontaneous breathing during mechanical ventilation. Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), a ventilation assist mode, is based on electrical activity of the diaphragm. Compared with traditional mechanical ventilation, NAVA would decrease patient-ventilator asynchrony and ventilator-induced lung injury.
