An Etymological Account of Cognitive Metaphor and English Word Roots

The paper first points out the inadequate study of cognitive metaphor and word roots,and then explores the possibility of studying them together with etymology.By adopting an etymological perspective and using synchronic and diachronic methods,the paper argues that metaphor and word roots can extend the meaning of a single word,which helps interpret part of the cause of the conceptual metaphor and deepen the understanding of a single conceptual metaphor.Its single existence in the directional metaphor or co-existence in the structural metaphor can help to recognize the intrinsic relationship between different conceptual metaphors as well as the relationship between conceptual metaphor and cognitive metonymy,serve as essential elements of etymological arguments,and become an important content in phonosemantics.
