John Updike is tended to be considered as a follower of Nabokov in US. As a writer, Updike not only inherits the literary style from Nabokov, but also often embeds Nabokov as a literary symbol in his literary context in the form of intertextuality, thus to have a conversation with the "grandmaster". As a reader, however, Updike can' t help restraining his anxiety while seeing Nabokov as one part of American native liter- ature. Nabokov' s purposely undervaluing of fiction' s humanistic content, is regarded as flaws of this "grand- master" from the perspective of Updike.
