摘要
严歌苓是新移民作家队伍中一位非常重要的作家,她有良好的小说叙事能力,娴熟的语言掌控能力,曾为读者营构一个个心迷神醉的故事。遗憾的是,在近作《赴宴者》中,这种良好的创作能力却消失了。作者为了增加故事的"传奇"色彩,悍然置小说的说服力于不顾,为此付出了惨痛的代价。《赴宴者》最终成了一部说服力孱弱,逻辑混乱,人物扁平,语言粗糙的小说。这不但显示了作者运用英语写作时的力不从心,而且也表现了向西方"谄媚"的混乱价值观。
A writer of importance in the team of new migrant writers, Yan Geling is a good storyteller with a mastery of（the Chinese）language who has created one fascinating story after another for her readers. Regretfully, though, such excellent abilities of hers have disappeared in her latest novel, The Banquet Bug, as she disregarded the convincingness of her fiction in order to add a‘legendary＇colour to her story, which comes at a disastrous cost, with the result that The Banquet Bug has turned into a novel of poor persuasiveness, confusing logic, flat characters and rough-edged language and shows that the author,when writing in English, falls short of expectations while exhibiting confused values in an attempt to‘flatter＇the West.
