维多利亚时期经历了英国历史上经济的繁荣昌盛和文化的绚烂多彩,但是经济的发展同时也给整个社会带来了诸如环境污染等众多问题。乔治·罗伯特·吉辛作为该时期最重要的小说家之一,在其代表作《新格拉布街》中以火车这一意象为线索,结合小说中两位男主人公截然相反的命运安排,对伴随着工业革命而产生的一系列社会秩序和价值观问题进行批判,对生态环境问题表示担忧。同时,通过对玛丽安这一女性形象的塑造,展示了她由最初的逆来顺受逐渐变得坚强、独立、果敢担当的过程,折射出作者对父权制的批判及其超前的女性意识。

Victorian period has experienced the economic prosperity and colorful cuhure in British history. But at the same time, with the development of the economy, many problems such as environmental pollution have also been caused. As one of the most important novelists in the late-Victorian period, George Robert Gissing in his masterpiece New Grub Street, taking the ＂train image＂ as a clue and combining the opposite fates of the two male characters, not only reflects his criticism of the overwhelming social orders and values, but also mirrors his deep contern for the ecological environment. Meanwhile, in the novel, Gissing also describes a woman character Marian who has grown from a timid girl to a brave, independent and responsible woman, which shows Gissing＇s criticism of patriarchy and his advanced female consciousness.
