"二十四友"的产生是西晋社会发展的结果。作为朝廷新贵的贾谧为"二十四友"提供了仕途捷径。"二十四友"毫不掩饰对功名的向往、对贾谧的巴结,这可能令人生厌,但这是那个时代的士人必要而无奈的人生选择。同为"二十四友"集团的主要人物,潘岳和陆机却心生嫌隙。《为贾谧作赠陆机十一章》是潘岳代贾谧所作,从中可发现两人之间矛盾的根源。

The coterie of men who were known as ＂Twenty Four Friends＂ was the resuh of the social development of the West Jin Dynasty. Jia Mi, an upstart in the imperial court, provided them with a short cut to officialdom. The twenty four friends made no effort to hide their desire for fame and fortune or their sycophancy toward Jia Mi. This might be detestable, but at that time they had no other choice. Pan Yue and Lu Ji were both members of this group, but they ended in mutual disagreement, the source of which can be found in ＂Chapter 11 Dedicated to Lu Ji Composed by Pan Yue on Behalf of Jia Mi for Lu Ji＂.
