β-adrenoceptor agonists( β-agonists for short) possess the capacity to regulate nutrient metabolism in an animal body, such as decreasing fat content, promoting protein synthesis and increasing feed efficiency. A lot of profit-oriented illegal users often use it as feed additive for animal products, but its residues in animal products eventually enter human body through food chain, which may pose potential risks to human health,so many countries have passed a series of laws and regulations to prohibit the use of β-agonists in animal husbandry. This article reviewed the mechanisms of action, standards and methods of detection of β-agonists,which would provide the reference in the study of β-agonists residues.
