The construction of black woman’s identity is a core issue concerned in African Ameircan literature. Houston A. Baker, a contemporary Afro-American literary critic, injects a gender dimension into the time image, to focus on the idea that time is related to changes and aesthetic experiences which results in gender construction of black woman. This paper, based on the time consciousness in Afro-American woman poetics, intends to interpret the liquidity and ethnic social characteristics in the process of the construction of black woman’s identity by reading Sula, probing into the problem of"diaspora"and"return"within black people’s cultural identity.
