Amiri Baraka is a leading author, theorist and social activist in contemporary America, with a far-reaching influence upon African American literature and American popular culture since the mid-20 th century. This paper presents a survey of Baraka's literary career and major works, and demonstrates Baraka's literary thoughts with an exploration to the"changing same"behind his shifts from Beat poet to Black Nationalist to Marxist-Leninist-Third Worldist and then to culturalist—his view of literature serving life and his aesthetic view of populist-avant-gardism.
