It remains a debated issue among the Chinese scholars of Turkic languages on how many long vowles there were as reflected from Divanu Lughatit Turk. This paper proposes that long vowels were represented with haxp (letters) while short vowels were represented with hairika (diacritics) according to the explanations on the "redundant letters" in the author's introductory remarks and his explanations about the orthographic representations and pronunciations of certain entries, as well as the commentaries by the translators of the Uyghur version of this dictionary. Along this line, numerous lexical items in the dictionary contained long vowels, and there were altogether 8 long vowels. However, as shown by the representations of vowels in certain entries, the distinction between long and short vowels was weakening. The author of the dictionary maintained that it was also acceptable when the long vowels in certain words were orthographically represented or phonetically pronounced as short vowels.
