The Starting Point of Xunzi's Ethical-political Philosophy:On the Theme of“Encouraging Learning”

《荀子·劝学》篇在荀子政治哲学中的地位一直没有得到足够的重视。事实上,《劝学》篇有着严谨的结构和深刻的思考,它并非资料丛抄或汇编,而是既体现了荀子和孔孟思想的一致性,也反映出其伦理政治哲学独特性的核心文本。《劝学》篇分为三个部分,第一部分中,"学不可以已"是荀子思想之总纲,而君子成德以施教是荀子伦理政治思想的目标。在第二部分,荀子讨论成德之学的过程和特征。第三部分中,荀子考察成德之学和礼的关联。荀子以学为君子立身之本,以六经和礼为学之内容,对于中国传统政治思想和制度产生了重要影响。

The position of the first article in Xunzi,＂Encouraging Learning＂has not been given sufficient attention to in Xunzi＇s political philosophy.In fact,with a rigorous structure and deep thinking,it is a core text that reflects not only the consistency between XunZi and Confucius and Mencius,but also the uniqueness of his political philosophy,rather than a compilation of some separate resources.＂Encouraging Learning＂consists of three parts.In the first part,the first sentence＂The process of learning should never come to an end＂is the main idea of Xunzi＇s thoughts,and that the gentleman should not only cultivate his virtues but teaches others to be good is Xunzi＇s ethical-political objective.In the second part,Xunzi discusses the process and the characteristics of self-cultivation.In the third,he discusses the relation between self-cultivation and rituals.In a word,Xunzi＇s idea of learning as the premise of a gentleman＇s conduct and life,and the Six Books and rituals as the content of learning had a major impact upon traditional Chinese political thoughts and institutions.
