On the Historic Truth of New Literature's Acceptance of Western Humanism

"五四"以来,新文学的"全盘西化"早已成为了学界不可动摇的客观事实。然而,当我们仔细去分析新文学的"西化"倾向时,却发现汉语思维中的"西化"概念,基本上都是中华民族文化智慧的自我闪现,与西方现代人文精神并无移植性的因果关系。新文学对西方人文观念的接受与阐释,无非就是一种自我心解的"内化"过程。它最终导致的不是西方对于传统的彻底取代,而是传统借助于西方的巧妙转型。"化西"而非"西化",才是新文学现代性的历史真相。

Since May 4th movement,there has been little doubt about the assertion that New Literature is totally westernized. However,an indepth study into New Literature reveals a truth that the so-called Westernized ideas borrowed into Chinese thinking is not a direct shift from the west,but inherently a heritage and reflection of traditional Chinese wisdoms. New Literature's acceptance and explanation of the Western humanism is nothing but a process to internalize what has already been comprehended in Chinese tradition,which finally leads to the transformation of Chinese traditions under the influence of Western concepts,rather than a blind replacement with the Western cultures. Hence,the author of this paper claims that internalization,instead of westernization,is the real core of New Literature's modernity.
