Exploration of Reasons Why Tablets and Couplets are not Mentioned in Yuan Ye

《园冶》中未涉及匾联,引起一些学者的猜测。有的说是因为匾联配合于柱、额的做法直到清代才兴盛,有的则认为在宋代的园林中题联已经很普遍。实际上,园林楹联虽在宋代已出现,但因文献记载绝少,尚不能证明已很普遍,但可以确定,其在元末明初已盛行。计成未提匾联,是因分工不同。

Tablets and couplets are not mentioned in Yuan Ye, which brin~ sonle scholars＇ speculation. Some people consider decorating pillars and lintels with tablets and couplets didn＇t flourish until the Qing dynasty, while others believe couplets became common in gardens in the Song dynasty. In fact, garden couplets have emerged in the Song dynasty. But because rarely documented, there is no proof that garden couplets had been common. We can sure it has been prevalent in the late Yuan aud early Ming dynasty. Ji Cheng did not mention tablets and couplets because division of labor is different.
