Jiaohe is the site of an ancient city notable in the Central Asia.Archaeological evidence sug- gests that Jiaohe city is the result of the social development of prehistoric Cheshi people.Originally set up in the CheShi kingdom period,Jiaohe city reached its climax of flourish and glory during the Gaochang Kingdom and Xizhou of the Tang Dynasty period.After Uyghurs conquered Gaochang, Jiaohe city began to decline.The structural method of Jiaohe city is unique in the history of city's development both in China and abroad as the purpose of its layout is solely for military defense. During the Western Han Dynasty,Jiaohe area was a place of pleasant environment with plenty water and lush grass,suitable for pasturing and cultivating.But as time passes,the riverbed surround Jiaohe city subsided seriously and the mesas around it rose,making Jiaohe city an isolated arid is- land.Among the manifold causes of the decline of Jiaohe city,tremendous change of environment is the key element.
