Objective To investigate the effects of tai chi practice on vestibular rehabilitation in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders. Methods Nine patients with vestibular vertigo were enrolled, including eight females and one male, aged from 27 to 61 years, the average age was 50.9 years. The patients underwent four-week tai chi practice(one time each day from Monday to Friday, one hour for each time). The equilibrium functions of patients were examined respectively before and after four-week tai chi practice to evaluate the effects of tai chi practice on vestibular rehabilitation. Results There were significant differences between before and after four-week tai chi practice for the patients with peripheral vestibular disorders in the mean time[(11.6±4.2)s vs.(8.6±3.4)s,P=0.007)],in the mean score[(4.0±0.9)vs.(1.3±0.5),P=0.000]of the get-up and go test,in the mean existence time for the stand-up on single foot with closed eyes[3.6(0,19.9)s vs.26.9(1.6,68.8)s,P=0.021],and in the mean score of the dizziness handicap inventory(50(0,78)vs.6(0,82),P=0.036)It was indicated that the patients’s equilibrium functions were effectively improved with 4-week tai chi practice. Conclusions Tai chi practice as a vestibular rehabilitation technique can effectively improve the equilibrium functions of the patients with peripheral vestibular disorders.
