报纸副刊从其诞生之日起,就曾以媚俗、迎合的面孔取悦于大众。奇闻异事、滑稽故事、武侠和言情小说,以及俗词俚曲等等,以其内容的趣味性和消闲性,为读者提供了茶余饭后的谈笑资料。如张恨水的小说《春明外史》《金粉世家》《啼笑因缘》等,就是这个时期报纸副刊登载的热门小说。

When the newspaper's supplement came into public eyes, it was used to cater to the public. Anecdotes, funny stories, martial arts and romantic novels, as well as vulgar words, and so on, these provided people information on gossip. For example, Zhang Henshui's novel 'History of Chunming' 'Aristocratic Family' 'Lovers Destiny' and so on, these are popular novels published on the newspaper's supplement during the early of the Republic of China.
