Objective To explore the association between green tea consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes. Methods A multistage cluster, random-sampling method was used to select a representative sample from Xuzhou. In total, 26 828 urban inhabitants aged 25 years or older were enrolled in this study. A standard questionnaire was used to collect data on general demographic characteristics, diseases history and family history, dietary factor, life behavior, green tea consumption history and other confounding factors. Comparisons between groups were carried out with χ^2 test or Z test for qualitative data and quantitative data respectively. Logistic regression was used for the analysis of relation between green tea and T2DM. Results The prevalence rate of type 2 diabetes and the rate of green tea consumption among urban inhabitants in Xuzhou areas was 6.50% and 18.27% respectively. After adjusting for age, gender, family disease history, body mass index, etc, the OR (95%CI) was 0.62 (0.51-0.89). The OR (95%CI) in men and women respectively were 0.61 (0.43-0.87) and 0.64(0.53-0.91). Subjects who consumed the more green tea showed lower risk of T2DM. Conclusion Consumption of green tea may protect against the development of T2DM in Xuzhou. There was a dose-response relationship between frequency and dosage of green tea consumption and the risk of T2DM.
