《兔子富了》是厄普代克的一部扛鼎之作。表面上,小说描绘了男主人公兔子与妻子复合后接手经营岳父车场生意,并借助石油危机的契机大获成功,得以过上富裕的中产阶级生活并供养儿子纳尔逊上大学。但在这家境殷实、祥和美满的表象之下,隐藏的是纳尔逊与兔子夫妻之间的各种有问题的家庭关系,这一切通过借助俄狄浦斯情结母题得以淋漓尽致地展现,纳尔逊对父亲兔子的敌视和对母亲简妮丝的过度依恋,深刻揭示了这一时期畸形的家庭关系,进而剖析了当时整个美国社会的社会家庭现状。

Rabbit is Rich is one of Updike’s classic works. Literally,it tells that Rabbit,after his reunion with his wife,resides with his mother-in-law,and takes over the running of the lot and makes success due to the moment of oil crisis.Then Rabbit is able to send his son Nelson to college and live a rich middle class life with his wife. However,under the illusion of solid finances and harmonious happiness lurk the problematic family relationships between Nelson and the Rabbit couple,which is completely demonstrated from the angle of the Oedipus complex motif,and therefore it is possible to investigate the contemporary family relationships in American society.
