Commentary on Yang Shuda＇s Etymology

杨树达的文字语源研究远绍乾嘉段王之学,近被西学东渐之风,既承章太炎字源学余绪,又熔甲骨金石之学,在声符含义规律的揭示、系联同源词等方面取得了很大成就,但也存在用文字的方法研究语源等语源学草创时期的时代局限。

Being influenced by the the introduction of Western Learning to the East,Yang Shuda＇s etymology carry forward the good traditions from Duan Yucai,Wang Niansun in Qianjia Period Qing Dynasty,benefit from Zhang Taiyan＇s related study and ancient writing study of the age.Yang achieves great success in bringing to light the law of phonetic notation meaning and concluding homologous words.Yang Shuda＇s etymology study,however,has limitations of that time.
