As a specific cultural concept in ancient China, " Juan" derives its meaning mainly from personality aesthetics and partakes of both Confucian and Taoist values. The literati, with the personality trait of " Juan" , were aloof from worldly affairs, unswayed in pursuing enterprises they thought right and contemptuous of false morals. They were frequently individu- alists to a fault. This article analyzes four types of this character: " Qu Yuan's intolerant Juan" , " Ruan Ji's overbearing Juan" , " Tao Qian's Juan as a herlnit" and " Jiang Kui's incorruptible Juan" , all of which are common manifestations of " Juan". Basically, " Juan" is the Confucian spirit in a new guise.
