Foundation fieldbus is a real-time digital communication network designed specifically forprocess control applications, Foundation fieldbus has the smallest hardware footprint of any technology in process automation. Foundation technology was developed to provide a solution for Virtual Marshalling^TM—software-based distributed I/O connectivity—in which devices provide multiple signals over the same two terminals. Instead of relying on custom hardware configurations to accomplish the functions of traditional marshalling, Foundation fieldbus performs these tasks through a software-based structure.
